If you have had the bad luck of receiving back pain, joint pain, or perhaps you sustained an injury, and you may have been recommended by a doctor to visit your local chiropractor. This can be a nerve-racking moment as you might be expecting painful exercises that your body is going to have to go through. However, this couldn’t be more wrong. The techniques and maneuvers that are performed today have been used for many years and are incredibly safe. So below, we’ve listed some of the exercises you can expect to try out during your first visit to a chiropractor.
Flexion-distraction: This move is also known as decompression manipulation. This exercise is performed by stretching out your whole body using a specially designed table. This move is often used to treat problems such as Arthritis, Sciatica, Scoliosis, Spinal stenosis, Lumbar disc injuries, and stiffness in the lower back.
Gonstead Technique: The Gonstead Technique begins with the patient lying on their side, while the professional applies pressure on their back. This is to rectify misaligned sectors of your spine. It is also common to have performed in a session, and it often one of the first exercises students learn to perform when in training.
Thompson Technique: This move requires the increasingly popular chiropractor table. This move is where the professional will massage deeply in the area of pain/ ache, causing your body to be dropped by a quarter of an inch. This drop causes a vibration in your body, which can relieve any pressure your body is holding.
Activator Technique: Used for treating anything from spinal pain to joint aches, the activator practice is not only one of the most common techniques used, but one of the most popular amongst clients. This maneuver uses a light impulse into the painful area, creating relaxation and decompressing of muscles and joints.
Diversified technique: This technique is usually related to adjustments around the body that create the famous ‘popping’ sounds. This is carried out by manual adjustments that correct the misaligned parts of the spine. The Diversified technique has been used for over a hundred years. Throughout this time, it has evolved to be able to rectify many forms of joint problems as well as spinal injuries.
Graston Technique: The Graston Technique engages with the tissues in your body by massaging and applying heavy pressure to the skin. This action allows for painful areas to become less restricted. The advantages of this technique are shorter treatment time, faster rehabilitation, and reduced need for anti-inflammatory drugs.
Ultrasound: The chiropractor you visit may wish to apply ultrasound to your spine and joints. Similar to heating, it can improve the healing process, stimulate blood flow and lessen pains and aches.
These are just a few of the most common maneuvers that are performed in chiropractic sessions. Of course, it depends on the individual and what aches and pains are the body is currently experiencing.
